Creating and deploying web app on google web app engine

In this blog I will talk something about cloud computing, PaaS and creating and deploying web app on google web app engine. Cloud is the buzzword these days. Cloud is a metaphor used for the internet. Many big companies including Microsoft and Google are already in cloud and can be used as PaaS (Platform as a Service).
Last week we took a look at the cloud computing, PaaS offerings in the market. We had small presentations in our company and checked out Google web App engine, Microsoft Azure, Salesforce.com and Caspio. I presented Google web app engine along with Swapnil. We created a small application and deployed it in the cloud using the google app engine. We used Eclipse as our development environment. Google provides plugin support for Eclipse that makes it easy to create and deploy your web app. Google app engine supports Python and Java Runtime environments.

Steps to create and deploy a web project using google app engine.
1. Create a google app engine account on http://appengine.google.com
2. Create and application with unique application ID(required while deploying) eg: exampleapp.appspot.com on Google App Engine.
3. Install Eclipse
4. Install Google plugin and SDK for Eclipse
5. 3 buttons will be added in the toolbar. Click on “g” to create a new web application project
6. Give some project name eg: ExampleWebApp and package name eg: com.example
7. In the package explorer you will find the created project
8. Open the src folder and right click on com.example, select Run As->web application.
9. To deploy click on the deploy button. It will open a pop-up window to login/connect to your google app engine account.
10. Initially the application ID is not set for the project. Click on the “App Engine Project Settings…” and set the application ID which you created in the google app engine account.
11. Click on deploy to upload the app on google app engine.
12. After the successful deployment, access the app through browser using your URL eg: exampleapp.appspot.com
